조지 플로이드의 살인범과 경찰의 폭력으로 인해 목숨을 잃은 모든 이들에게 정의가 실현되어야 합니다.
너무나 오랜 세월 동안 흑인 혐오가 번성하여 수많은 커뮤니티 내에서 우리를 분열시켰습니다.
우리는 흑인 커뮤니티에 대한 폭력과 비인간화를 규탄하며, 전국의 흑인 커뮤니티와 연대하여 경찰의 책임을 강화하고 흑인에 대한 폭력을 멈추게 하기 위해 그들과 함께합니다.
오늘날에는 커뮤니티끼리, 지역끼리, 또 사회끼리 매우 상호 의존적임을 우리는 압니다. 우리는 우리 모두가 각 기관 내에 자리한 그리고 각자의 마음 속에 자리한 인종차별을 해체하기 위해 노력함으로써 흑인과 유색인종들의 건강과 복지에 더 관심을 기울이기를 바랍니다.
자신에게 이렇게 물어보세요. "내가 이 변화의 순간을 어떻게 지원할 수 있을까?", "타성에 젖어 있지 않도록 나는 어떤 행동을 할 수 있을까?", "이 전례 없는 시기에 나는 우리 커뮤니티에 무슨 도움을 줄 수 있을까?" 라고...
2021년 3월 애틀랜타 총격 사건에 대한 입장
지역사회 여러분,
많은 분들이 수요일 아침, 하루를 여는 시간에 애틀란타에서 들려온 비극적인 뉴스를 들었을 것입니다. 한 백인 남성에 의해 저질러진 총격 사건으로 8명이 살해를 당했는데 그들 중 6명은 아시아계 미국인 여성으로 알려졌습니다.
이러한 폭력사태를 대하며, 많은 분들이 밀려오는 슬픔, 고통, 분노, 두려움, 무력감 등으로 망연자실하고 있을 줄 압니다. 단절감마저 느끼며 가슴이 답답한 분들도 있을 것입니다. 잠시 이 상황을 합리화하고 싶었을 것입니다. 그 사건이 우리가 사는 지역에서 일어난 일이 아니니까…아시아인이라는 이유만으로 그런 건 아니겠지… 그런 일을 하니 위험하지… 모두 한인들도 아닌데 뭐…라고 하면서요. 하지만 문제는 조사 당국이 “그는 그날 단지 여러가지 안 좋은 일을 겪고 있었다.” 라고 치부해 버렸다는 사실입니다.
이 와중에도 애틀랜타에서 살해된 여성들과 비슷한 상황에 놓여있는 여러 이민자 여성들은 생명의 위협을 느끼는 가운데서도 멈추지 않고 가족을 먹여 살리기 위해 값싼 인건비를 받으며 열심히 일하고 있습니다.
그 뿐 아니라, “위안부”나 결혼 이민자들이 겪었던 비극적 유산은 시간과 공간을 막론하고 전승되어 아시아계 여성들을 상대로 자행되는 성적인 종속과 비인간화는 계속되고 있습니다.
한편, 아시아계 미국인 사회 내에서는 코로나바이러스 유행병을 겪은 1년 동안 폐업한 사업체들, 사회와 단절된 가정들, 추방자들, 서류미비자들이 당하고 있는 부당함에 대해, 그리고 반아시아적인 언사 및 외교정책이 촉발하여 미국 전역에 발생한 3,795건의 폭력 사건들에 대해 분노들이 서서히 들끓어 왔습니다. 아시아계 미국인들을 상대로 발생한 폭력 사건에 대해서 자세히 알고 싶거나 증오 범죄를 신고하기 원하는 분들은 웹사이트 stopaapihate.org을 방문해 보시길 권합니다.
우리 한인 커뮤니티의 구성원들은 복잡한 심경을 안고, 이 사건을 각인하며 앞으로 나아갈 여러 방법을 모색하고 있습니다. 개인적으로 슬픔과 분노를 표출하는 방법도 있습니다. 그러나 우리의 반응이 각자의 건강에는 물론, 우리 공동체 전체의 건강에 어떤 영향을 주게 될지 생각해보시기 바랍니다. 이에 우리는 여러분이 다음과 같은 의도적 노력에 동참해 주시기를 부탁드립니다:

우리는 이렇게 사망한 여성들을 외면하지 않을 것이며, 우리 자신이 이민자로서 격어야 했던 고충들을 잊지 않을 것입니다. 우리는 그 여성들을 기리고 기억할 것입니다.

우리는 이번 살인사건이 부당하며, 그 동안 자행되어 온 억압, 즉 우리가 관행적으로 겪어야만 했던 백인 우월주의, 외국인 혐오, 인종차별 등과 일맥상통한다는 것을 분명히 하고 알리겠습니다. 우리는 오랜 식민지 역사의 고통과 한국계 미국인으로서 당해왔던 차별을 기억할 것입니다.

우리는 각자 개인 이익을 초월하고, 이 땅에 오기 전부터 우리가 보여왔던 오랜 집단 저항의 역사와 함께, 이민자 공동체로서 우리가 함께 만들어 온 이민자 커뮤니티의 연대성을 자각하겠습니다. 우리는 더 이상 침묵하지 않고 억압에 저항하며, 공동체를 위해 목소리를 높일 것입니다.

이번에 희생당한 여성들을 애도하고 있는 이 순간, 우리는 아시아계 미국인 커뮤니티와 행동을 함께하며 인종차별적 증오심을 맹렬히 비난합니다. 그 증오심이 바로 지난 화요일 밤 살인사건의 동기였으며, 우리 커뮤니티 구성원들을 매일매일 압박하고 있는 실체이기 때문입니다. 우리는 지금 비통해 하고 있지만, 건강하게 번영하는 사회를 그려 보기도 합니다. 우리는 청소년들과 어르신들, 그리고 각 가정들이 문화적 언어적으로 필요한 도움을 받으며 건강하고 안전한 환경에서 살아갈 수 있도록 마음과 힘을 다하여 힘쓰겠습니다. 코로나바이러스 유행병으로 인해 우리의 몸과, 생활 여건, 그리고 정신 건강에까지 가해진 어려움들도 계속해서 측은지심을 갖고 대응하겠습니다. 마지막으로, 이 위기의 시기에 지역 및 주 정부와 지역 사회 구성원들, 그리고 우리의 이웃들께서 우리 커뮤니티를 물심양면으로 지원해 주실 것을 요청하는 바입니다.

Dear Community,
On Wednesday morning, many of us woke up to news from Atlanta about the tragic murders of eight people, six of whom were Asian American women, all committed by a white man.
In response to this violence, we may have felt overwhelmed with grief, pain, anger, fear, helplessness, numbness… We may have also felt disconnected to it all. It wasn’t in my town… It wasn’t because they were Asian - It was because of their line of work…They weren’t all Korean…The killer was “just having a bad day.”
Meanwhile, many immigrant women, similar to the sisters murdered in Atlanta, continue to work hard in low wage jobs to earn money and feed their families despite fearing for their lives.
Meanwhile, Asian women continue to be sexually subjugated and dehumanized, bound across time and space to the traumatic legacies of “comfort women” and migrant brides.
Meanwhile the Asian American community is quietly raging over a year of this pandemic, lost businesses, isolated families, deportations of adoptees, injustice toward the undocumented, and 3,795 (and counting) reported incidents of violence nation-wide motivated by hate and fueled by anti-Asian rhetoric and foreign policy. Members of our Korean community will feel a range of emotions about this incident and remember in different ways moving forward. There is space and freedom to grieve and be angry. However, we call on our community to reflect on how our own responses impact our individual health and the health of our community. We hope you join us in our intentional commitments:

We will not distance ourselves from these women and forget our own stories of immigrant struggle. We will honor them and remember.

We will acknowledge these murders as unjust and rooted in oppression – the same white supremacy, xenophobia and racism that we routinely face as Korean Americans. - We will remember the pain of our long, colonized history and the discrimination we routinely face as Korean Americans.

We will rise above self-interest, and recognize our long history of collective resistance before coming to this land and the interconnected immigrant communities that we have built together. We will no longer be quiet and raise our voices against oppression and for our community.

We will not suppress but rather explore our feelings and the pain caused by this incident by sharing our stories with our family members and our community. If you are looking for ways to do this, please consider participating in the many community building programs we offer.
We stand with our Asian American community in this time of grief and condemn the racist hatred that motivated the killings on Tuesday night and oppresses our community members each and every day. As we mourn, we look towards a healthy and thriving community. We will strive for healthy and safe environments through much needed cultural- and language-specific support for our youth, elders and families. We are responding compassionately to address the challenges that this pandemic has brought to our bodies, our living conditions and our mental health. And we call on our local and state governments, neighbors and community members to support and invest in our community in this time of crisis.
